Kenya’s healthcare system is under increasing pressure from the growing burden of non-communicable diseases, particularly cancer. Over the past decade, cancer has emerged as one of the country’s leading causes of death, forcing policymakers, healthcare institutions, and private investors to prioritize oncology infrastructure and specialist training.
What is cancer?
Cancer is a large group of diseases with one thing in common: They happen when normal cells become cancerous cells that multiply and spread. Your genes send instructions to your cells — like when to start and stop growing, for example. Normal cells follow these instructions, but cancer cells ignore them.
Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the U.S. But fewer people are dying of cancer now than 20 years ago. Early detection and innovative treatments are curing cancer and helping people with cancer live longer.
However, Kenya’s oncology workforce remains relatively small compared to the population’s needs. Current registry data shows that the country has just over 100 oncology-related specialists serving millions of patients nationwide.
The shortage affects every aspect of cancer care:
- Delayed diagnosis
- Long radiotherapy waiting lists
- Limited rural access
- High treatment costs
- Dependence on referral hospitals
- Unequal distribution of specialists
Most oncologists remain concentrated in Nairobi, creating regional disparities in healthcare access. Counties far from major referral hospitals often lack specialized oncology units entirely.

At the same time, Kenya has made important progress. New cancer centers have opened in counties outside Nairobi, local oncology training programs have expanded, and public awareness campaigns have improved screening rates for cervical and breast cancer.
Still, experts warn that Kenya requires a much larger oncology workforce to meet future demand as cancer incidence continues rising due to population growth, lifestyle changes, urbanization, and increased life expectancy.
