China and Ethiopia Deepen Ties in Infrastructure, Green Tech, and Digital Economy

China is deepening its partnership with Ethiopia—one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies. During a visit to Addis Ababa, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to boost their “all-weather strategic partnership.”

Wang stressed aligning China’s development plans with Ethiopia’s goals. He called for stronger trade ties and “high-quality Belt and Road cooperation,” Xinhua reported.

Ethiopia is a priority for Beijing. The IMF forecasts 7.2% economic growth there in 2026. Therefore, China sees it as a model BRI partner with a young, rising consumer base.

Moreover, Wang urged Ethiopia to support Chinese businesses. He also praised its role in regional diplomacy—especially in the Horn of Africa.

Both sides agreed to expand collaboration. They will strengthen traditional areas like transport, energy, and trade. In addition, they plan to grow ties in e-commerce, artificial intelligence, and green energy.

Cultural exchanges will also increase. Education, tourism, media, and think-tank partnerships are now part of the agenda. This builds long-term mutual understanding.

Wang’s trip continues to Somalia, Tanzania, and Lesotho. He will wrap up his Africa tour on January 12. This shows China’s ongoing commitment to the continent.

Ultimately, this China-Ethiopia cooperation reflects Beijing’s strategy. It seeks high-growth markets while promoting global development through tech and infrastructure.
